The Birth of a Vision

THE BIRTH OF A VISION: CUSTECH, OSARA AND THE LEGACY OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN KOGI STATE

Kogi State today stands proudly among the emerging centres of scientific and technological innovation in Nigeria, thanks to the bold foresight, exceptional courage, and unwavering commitment of one man, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON, former Governor of Kogi State.

The establishment of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, will forever be remembered as one of the consequential achievements of his administration and a turning point in the educational advancement of the State.

This remarkable institution, now a vibrant, fast-growing university with a clear mandate in science, technology, engineering, environmental sciences, and health disciplines, did not emerge by accident. It is the product of deliberate vision, historical awareness, strategic policymaking, and a determination to secure the future of Kogi State.

A Historical Need, A Visionary Response

For decades, the area known today as Kogi State, formerly Kabba Province, was renowned for its quest for education. Yet, as Nigeria’s population increased and competition for university admission intensified, opportunities available to many qualified Kogi indigenes began to diminish significantly.

With increasing demand for university education, Kogi State’s placement opportunities within the catchment area of major northern institutions were shrinking, and candidates increasingly faced challenges accessing university education.

The State’s first university, established in 1999, was envisioned as a multi-campus institution but struggled to meet the rising demand for modern, technology-driven disciplines.

As educational reforms improved basic and secondary school enrolment, pressure on tertiary institutions surged, with thousands of Kogi applicants competing for limited spaces across existing universities in the State.

It became clear that a new and specialised university was not just desirable; it was essential.

Governor Yahaya Bello’s Defining Intervention

Where others saw obstacles, Governor Yahaya Bello saw opportunity. Where others hesitated, he took decisive action.

Recognising the urgency of the crisis and the strategic importance of scientific and technological education in a rapidly evolving global landscape, Governor Bello conceived the idea of a second State university dedicated to the future.

The institution was designed to:

  • Expand access for thousands of qualified secondary school leavers.

  • Fill critical manpower gaps in engineering, technology, and health sciences.

  • Strengthen research and innovation capacity.

  • Position Kogi State as a leader in science and technology education.

The result of that bold decision was the
Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.

The speed and decisiveness with which the vision was translated into reality marked an important chapter in the history of the university.

  • 20 August 2020: The Kogi State House of Assembly passed the bill establishing CUSTECH.

  • 21 August 2020: Governor Bello assented to the bill.

  • November 2020: The National Universities Commission granted the required recognition for the running of the university.

  • 17 December 2020: The pioneer management team was inaugurated.

Transformational Infrastructure

Beyond policy and legal frameworks, Governor Yahaya Bello transformed a vast expanse of land in Osara into a rapidly developing university campus.

His infrastructural investments were targeted at supporting long-term growth in science and technology disciplines.

Early TETFund Enlistment: A Major Breakthrough

Through strategic engagement, Governor Bello secured TETFund enlistment, unlocking Special Intervention Projects including:

  • Faculty of Science Complex

  • Faculty of Environmental Sciences Complex

  • Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Complex

The size and quality of these facilities created an academic environment with capacities designed to support the university’s long-term development.

These investments formed an important part of the foundation upon which CUSTECH continues to develop as a centre for learning, innovation and opportunity.

A Legacy Sustained: Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo

If Governor Yahaya Bello laid the foundation, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has continued the development of CUSTECH through investments in welfare, health, security, infrastructure and partnerships.

Barefoot College, Nigeria β€” one of the national centres located at CUSTECH, focusing on renewable energy, hands-on technology training and rural women empowerment in solar engineering.

5. Consolidation and Expansion of Existing Infrastructure

Governor Ododo has continued to provide support for maintenance, programme development and infrastructure enhancement to ensure that inherited structures remain functional and capable of supporting academic development.

A Shared Legacy of Vision and Continuity

The Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, stands as a symbol of what sustained institutional development can achieve when vision is followed by continuity.

His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON conceived the vision and laid the infrastructural foundation for the university.

His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has continued the development of that foundation through investments in welfare, health, security, infrastructure and partnerships.

Together, these successive phases of development have contributed to transforming the landscape at Osara into a growing centre of learning, innovation and opportunity.
