Recognising the urgency of the crisis and the strategic importance of scientific and
technological education in a rapidly evolving global landscape, Governor Bello conceived
the idea of a second State university dedicated to the future—an institution that would
expand access for thousands of qualified secondary school leavers, fill critical manpower
gaps in engineering, technology, and health sciences, strengthen research and innovation
capacity, and position Kogi State as a leader in science and technology education.
The result of that bold decision was the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara. The speed and decisiveness with which Governor Bello translated this vision into reality remain exemplary. On 20 August 2020, the Kogi State House of Assembly passed the bill establishing CUSTECH.
On 21 August 2020, the very next day, Governor Bello assented, demonstrating his characteristic courage, clarity of purpose, and commitment to transformational governance.
By November 2020, the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted full recognition required for the running of the university, and on 17 December 2020, the pioneer management team was inaugurated, setting the institution on its historic path.
This swift sequence of events is widely regarded as one of the most efficient university establishment processes in Nigerian history.
Transformational Infrastructure: A Monument to Yahaya Bello’s Vision
Beyond policy and legal frameworks, Governor Yahaya Bello transformed a vast expanse of land in Osara into one of the most rapidly developing university campuses in Nigeria. His infrastructural investments were bold, unprecedented, and strategically targeted to support long-term growth in science and technology disciplines. His visionary leadership delivered:
The Faculty of Engineering, One of the Largest in Nigeria
Governor Bello built the Faculty of Engineering complex, widely regarded as one of the largest single Faculty of Engineering buildings in the entire Nigerian University System. This monumental structure was a clear indication of his intention to position CUSTECH as a powerhouse in engineering education, research, and innovation.
The Faculty of Computing and Informatics
A state-of-the-art facility planned to house the computing, information technology, cyber-security, and related digital programmes, reflecting the former Governor’s commitment to producing the next generation of ICT professionals and innovators.
The College of Medical Sciences and Its Teaching Hospital
In an era when many States struggle to secure accreditation for medical programmes, Yahaya Bello dared to build big. He built a massive multi-storey College of Medical Sciences and completed the University Teaching Hospital, an ambitious investment that continues to distinguish CUSTECH as a future medical training hub.
The University Library
A majestic central University library of 3-suspended floors built to adequately accommodate users in line with the regulatory requirements as the university grows, as well as to house various sections of the library.
The Central Administrative Building
A befitting administrative edifice that reflects the dignity of the institution and provides operational stability for the university’s governance structure.
Early TETFund Enlistment: A Major Breakthrough
One of the most impressive accomplishments of Governor Bello’s tenure was his tireless pursuit of TETFund enlistment for CUSTECH, a process that often takes new institutions several years. Through strategic engagement and persistent advocacy, he secured the university’s recognition by TETFund much earlier than expected. This immediately unlocked Special Intervention Projects, resulting in the construction of the Faculty of Science complex, Faculty of Environmental Sciences complex, and Faculty of Management and Social Sciences complex. These buildings are today some of the largest academic structures on campus and continue to accelerate programme development, accreditation readiness, and academic expansion.
Campus Infrastructure that Speaks of Vision and Scale
To ensure seamless access to these academic complexes, the former Governor constructed a standard dual-carriage university main entrance road connecting to the ring road that elegantly encircles the entire academic area, in line with the approved campus master plan. This integrated road network remains a defining feature of the university’s physical layout and a symbol of foresight in campus planning. The sheer size and quality of these facilities engineering, sciences, computing, medicine, administrative structures, and roads created an academic environment with capacities far beyond the immediate needs of a young university. This intentional “ahead-of-demand” development is unprecedented in the Nigerian University System and stands as one of the most transformative infrastructural legacies in the history of State-owned universities in Nigeria. It is impossible to recount the story of CUSTECH without acknowledging that these monumental facilities formed the backbone of the university’s rapid growth, successful accreditation processes, and its capacity to expand into high-demand disciplines. For these extraordinary achievements, history will forever honour Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON, as the founder whose visionary ambition built CUSTECH not just for today, but for generations to come.
A Legacy Sustained and Expanded: Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s Transformative Stewardship
If Governor Yahaya Bello laid the grand foundation, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has become the leader who nurtures, strengthens, and expands that legacy with purpose, sensitivity, and clear developmental insight. Since assuming office, Governor Ododo has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the continued growth of CUSTECH, ensuring that every foundational investment blossoms into a powerful engine of academic excellence.
Student Welfare: Building a Conducive Environment for Learning
Understanding that learning thrives in comfort and safety, Governor Ododo has placed exceptional priority on student welfare. His administration has constructed several new, modern student hostels, initiated additional hostel projects to meet rising demand, and ensured that accommodation challenges do not hinder academic success.
These hostels provide secure, clean, and conducive living environments, heavily contributing to the students’ academic productivity.
Health and Wellbeing: Completion of a New University Health Centre
With student enrolment increasing rapidly each year, the original University Clinic could no longer meet the demands. Governor Ododo responded decisively by completing a new, spacious, fully equipped University Health Centre—now nearing operational readiness—ensuring access to prompt medical attention for students and staff.
Security and Safety: Comprehensive Protection of the Campus
Recognising the importance of safety in an academic environment, Governor Ododo has taken bold measures to secure the campus through additional perimeter fencing, high-grade surveillance camera systems, and engagement of a reputable external security agency to provide 24-hour protection.
With these initiatives, CUSTECH is now one of the most secure university campuses in North-Central Nigeria.
Strategic Partnerships and External Collaborations
The World Bank L-PRES Project
A major World Bank programme, Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES), is now being located within the campus vicinity. This project will deliver modern livestock facilities, a veterinary clinic, and capacity-building for agriculture-based research—strengthening the university’s agricultural science programmes.
The Barefoot College, Nigeria
As part of the national rollout of six Barefoot College centres, one is now sited within CUSTECH. This global innovation centre focuses on renewable energy development, hands-on technology training, and rural women empowerment in solar engineering.
Consolidation and Expansion of Existing Infrastructure
Governor Ododo has continued to support the full development, utilisation, and upgrading of the massive structures inherited from his predecessor. His administration consistently provides funding, maintenance support, programme development, and infrastructure enhancement.
A Shared Legacy of Vision and Continuity
In conclusion, the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, stands today as a symbol of what bold leadership can achieve when vision meets continuity.
His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON conceived the dream, laid the solid infrastructural foundation, and built one of the most ambitious State university campuses in Nigeria.
His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has taken that dream forward, expanding it with strategic investments in welfare, health, security, infrastructure, and global partnerships. Together, their leadership represents a continuum of excellence, transforming Osara into a world-class centre of learning, innovation, and opportunity.
CUSTECH is more than a university. It is a promise fulfilled. A legacy sustained. And a shining demonstration of visionary governance across two administrations dedicated to the future of Kogi State.
