Why the University?

The Kogi State was created from the old Kwara State and Benue State; the two states had always been in the lead in terms of enrolments into various programmes of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria which was the main regional university catering for the northern region before the establishment of the second-generation universities. As a way to control the ever-increasing demand from the States, the entry requirements into various programmes of the university had to be raised. This trend has kept manifesting in the present Kogi State.

Under the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abubakar Audu, in year 2000, the Kogi State Government took advantage of the placement of education on concurrent list in the Nigerian Constitution and establish the first State university, Kogi State University, now Prince Abubakar University, Anyigba to ameliorate the difficulties usually encountered by the youths in securing admission. The Main Campus main Campus of the university is located at Anyigba in Kogi East Senatorial District.

The University was billed to have two other campuses to be located in the other two senatorial districts in response to the demand of the teeming young secondary school leavers clamouring for university education.

Five years prior to the establishment of CUSTECH, Osara, the State has maintained a leading position in the North-Central geopolitical zone, second in the northern region and 10th at national level with respect the total application for placement into higher institutions in the country through Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The State annual applications for admission into higher institutions through the Board has risen considerably from 60,000 in 2015 to 74,553 in 2019. Out of the total candidates that applied in 2016, the number that applied to the State university stood at 21,963 while the official admission quota allocated by the National Universities Commission to the State university was 5,062. Other universities that could provide space for the rest of the teeming secondary school leavers were equally under admission pressures.

The State currently hosts three universities, one State University, one Federal University and one Private university offering similar scope of academic disciplines, mainly in humanities and basic sciences.

The combined capacity based on official admission quotas for the three Universities in the State is less than eight thousand. The rate of expansion of these institutions aimed at assimilating the ever-increasing demand for higher education in the State is relatively slow. The current State Government is undertaking various educational reforms aimed at improving the quality of training and encouraging enrolments at primary and secondary school levels. In addition, the ongoing rehabilitation works in these schools, in terms of the provision of necessary facilities, would greatly improve their capacities. These efforts would surely trigger greater demand for higher education in the subsequent years.

The economies of the world are now knowledge-driven. As the country is taking steps to meet its goals for socioeconomic development, it is imperative that States take action to address the challenges of underdevelopment.

The availability of the right manpower resources plays a crucial role in the realization of the economic goals of the State and the country in general. It has therefore become imperative that areas such as Science, Technology, and Health become the primary focus in human resource development to address the current challenges of underdevelopment and healthcare delivery.

In line with the present dictate, the decision of the present government to establish another full-fledged, specialized State University is perfectly in tune with earlier plans of the State to cover the crucial areas of health, science, and technology disciplines. The full-status university would largely address admission difficulty occasioned by the astronomical increase in the demand for university education in these specialized disciplines.

In his usual wisdom and foresight, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello, recognized the huge manpower and research deficit in health, science, and technology, and therefore proposed the establishment of a Specialised University for the State. The scope of the academic programme development of the University would be initially limited to the Academic Disciplines of Sciences, Engineering, and Technology, Environmental Sciences, and Health Sciences.

The carefully selected discipline coverage would offer extensive development of the related academic programmes and promotion of high-level research and innovation for the technological advancement and socio-economic development of the State and the general well-being of the citizens.
