Kogi State today stands proudly among the emerging centres of scientific and technological innovation in Nigeria, thanks to the bold foresight, exceptional courage, and unwavering commitment of one man, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON, former Governor of Kogi State. The establishment of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, will forever be remembered as one of the most consequential achievements of his administration and a turning point in the educational advancement of the State.
This remarkable institution, now a vibrant, fast-growing university with a clear mandate in science, technology, engineering, environmental sciences, and health disciplines, did not emerge by accident. It is the product of deliberate vision, historical awareness, strategic policymaking, and an extraordinary determination to secure the future of Kogi State
A Historical Need, A Visionary Response
For decades, the area known today as Kogi State (formerly Kabba Province) was renowned for its quest for education. Yet, as Nigeria’s population increased and competition for university admission intensified, the opportunities available to many qualified Kogi indigenes began to diminish significantly. With this increasing general demand for university education, Kogi State’s placement opportunities within the catchment area of major northern institutions were shrinking as it was not considered educationally disadvantaged, and as such its candidates became increasingly marginalised. The State’s first university, established in 1999, was envisioned as a multi-campus institution but struggled to meet the rising demand for modern, technology-driven disciplines. As educational reforms improved basic and secondary school enrolment, the pressure on tertiary institutions surged, with tens of thousands of Kogi applicants competing for limited spaces across all existing universities in the State.
Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Osara is the brainchild of His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, The former Executive Governor of Kogi State. The dream came to be out of the burning desire to relieve citizens of Kogi State of the recurrent ordeal of their admissions into Nigerian Universities; thus providing secondary school leavers of the State opportunities to pursue careers in science and technology-related specializations. Stories of Kogi State indigenes scoring impressively high marks in UTME, yet finding it difficult to secure admissions into medicine, engineering, pharmacy, and a host of other professional programmes have become commonplace and increasingly traumatizing. The search for opportunities to assuage this annual nerve-wracking experience, still relying on the limited admission space in the tertiary institutions of the State and the country in general had become a mere mirage. The establishment of CUSTECH represents the ultimate in Kogi State government’s resolve to widen the spectrum of opportunities for the younger generation to meet the challenges of the future, achieve self-actualisation and maximally contribute their quota to national development and beyond. Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara a State-owned university in Kogi State Nigeria was established as the 51st State University in Nigeria on the 20th August 2020.
