CUSTECH,Osara Faculty of Engineering Hosts COREN-OBE Workshop to Enhance Engineering Education

The Faculty of Engineering at Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara has successfully concluded a two-day workshop focused on the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria’s Outcome-Based Education (COREN-OBE) framework. The event, held at the university auditorium, brought together Heads of Departments, senior academic staff, and technical personnel from the Faculty of Engineering.

In his opening address, the Vice Chancellor of CUSTECH,Osara, Engr. Prof. Abdulrahman Asipita Salawu, represented by the Director of Academic Planning, Pharmacist Muhammed Asuku Audu, encouraged participants to incorporate the workshop’s teachings into their professional practices.

Professor E.A.P. Egbe, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, highlighted the critical importance of aligning the university’s engineering programs with COREN’s OBE requirements. He emphasized the need to develop robust Programme Outcomes (POs), Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs), and Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) to meet modern engineering educational standards.

The workshop featured presentations from distinguished COREN officials; Professor J.A. Olorunmaiye from the University of Ilorin, Professor E.A. Afolabi from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and Mrs. Rahila Umar. These experts delivered comprehensive sessions covering Bloom’s Taxonomy, COREN accreditation criteria, and the three fundamental aspects of OBE: Outcomes, Standards, and Opportunities.

During his presentation, Professor Olorunmaiye stressed the vital importance of critical thinking skills for engineers, asserting that “an engineer should be able to think faster than a scientist.” This sentiment underscored COREN’s mission to transform engineering education in Nigeria, ensuring graduates possess not only academic knowledge but also practical skills essential in today’s engineering landscape.

The two day workshop featured interactive sessions where participants were divided into groups to apply their newly acquired knowledge through practical exercises.

At the end of the event, the university Vice Chancellor, Engr Prof. Abdulrahman Asipita Salawu graciously presented commemorative gifts to the workshop facilitators to express the university’s appreciation for their collaboration and support, a symbol of mutual respect and the strengthening of institutional ties.
